Everything you own, and where it is.

Kept is a self-hosted, open-source inventory of your homes, garages and storage, with every thing's paperwork and its history. It runs on your own machine, and nothing leaves it unless you turn it on.

What Kept is

An inventory that knows where things are, and what came with them.

Homes, garages and storage units; the rooms, shelves, boxes and safes inside them; and the things inside those, from furniture to a single cable. Each thing keeps its receipts, manuals and warranties, and its life: lent, in repair, sold.

  • Places inside placesA tree of locations, rooms, shelves and boxes. Move a box and everything in it moves too.
  • Labels you can scanEvery thing and place gets a short ID on a printable label with a QR code. Scan it to see what is inside.
  • The paperwork, attachedReceipts, invoices, manuals, warranties and serials live on the thing they belong to, with expiries that remind you.
  • Vehicles and machinesMeter readings, services, fuel and schedules, for the car and for anything else that needs looking after.
  • Shared with the householdA location is shared with the people who live there, each with a role, from admin to viewer.
  • AI assistant and MCPYour provider or a local model fills things in from photos and receipts. Claude and other AI agents connect over MCP. All optional.
On a phone

Built for the moment you are standing in the garage.

Kept installs to a phone’s home screen. Capture with the camera, scan a label, find the spare HDMI cable, and keep working without a connection: changes made offline sync when the phone is back online.

Who it is for

People who would rather know than guess.

  • HouseholdsEveryone who lives in a place sees what is there and where it went, and the paperwork is at hand on claim day.
  • Self-hostersOne container and Postgres, on any machine with 2 GB of RAM and 2 cores. Docker Compose or Kubernetes, amd64 or arm64.
  • The privacy-mindedNo telemetry of any kind. The update check is off until an admin turns it on, and the AI provider is yours to choose.
  • DevelopersA documented HTTP API, an MCP server for AI clients with scoped tokens, and a codebase you can read end to end.
Your data outlives the server

A backup you can read without Kept.

Each nightly backup holds a readable copy of every location: web pages, spreadsheets, thumbnails and receipts that open in any browser, with no Kept and no network. If the house burns down with the server in it, restic, the backup’s password and a laptop are enough to see what you owned.
